Feature Friday: SassyBelleWares

May 31, 2013 at 10:22 am (Etsy, Etsy D-Listers, Feature Friday)

Last Christmas, as a gift, I got a few things from SassyBelleWares. Most people don’t know this, but my hair is incredibly long. I don’t do a whole lot with it, except, pin it out of my face, leave it down, or throw it up into a sock bun. I’ve been pinning up and around and all over a lot since Christmas because of the awesome hair pins and clips I got from Sassy’s shop!

Here is one set that I have, and LOVE. My child takes off with these all the time, sticks them in her hair and proceeds to tell me “I don’t know where your flower pin went.” Because, I can’t see it sticking out of her hair, right? 🙂

Not only does SassyBelleWares have hair pins and clips. There is a huge selection of jewelry. Here are some of my favorite pieces:

Vintage Week Interview: VintageCarolina

November 25, 2011 at 10:08 am (Etsy, Etsy D-Listers)

My friend VintageCarolina did this interview with me! Here it is!

1. How’d you get started on Etsy?
I opened my shop about 2 years ago. I sell vintage items and supplies in particular. I have lots of vintage laces and other sewing notions and trims. Many years ago I had a vintage clothing shop and got interested in vintage linens and laces so have collected for a long time.

2. What was your inspiration for your shop?
I have sold antiques on and off for years as I have always been a collector. If you collect you frequently change your focus or favorite items to collect so you are always destashing your old collections to help fund your new collections.

3. What’s your favorite shop item and why?
One of my favorite items is the collections of library card catalog cards that I sell. I was really fortunate to get ahold of these. I have always loved libraries and books in general.
Library Catalog Cards Vintage Ephemera for Card Making, Scra… by VintageCarolina $5.90 USD
Favorite

I am also a big fan of the laces in my shop. I have been able to buy large bolts of most of these as they are old stock from factory warehouses. Makes them a good buy for anyone who does sewing.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/VintageCarolina?section_id=6836473

4. How do you unwind when you’re not creating?
I just love to read. My hubby and I like to crab and catch shrimp. It’s great fun to bring it home and have fresh seafood for dinner!

5. What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
Fresh coconut, can’t be beat!

6. What pushes you to want to create something?
I love to sew and make things from vintage linens. When I see something really clever I always think to myself, “I can make that!” and I don’t want to quit until I do!

7. What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid. As an adult, if you stumble upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?
Now this is going to show my age…not cartoons but I loved to watch the “little Rascals”. Today, that is considered politically incorrect but I would definitely love to see them again and hear Alfalfa sing to Darla, “The object of my affection, can change my complection from white to rosie red…”

8. What’s your fantasy job?
I would love to get paid to travel and write reviews of restaurants and tourist destinations. Now that is the perfect job, getting paid to eat good food!

9. Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
A Mounds candy bar…the combination of coconut and dark chocolate, yum!

10. List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
I am an ephemera fiend! I love any and all old paper, illustrations and books. I can’t pass a box of old letters and books by.
I have never said no to a fresh coconut cake in my life and I never will, don’t care if I get as big as a barn.
Handmade lace and old linens, I have tons but I can’t quit buying it. I am amazed by the hours it took for some of these items to be created.

11. List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.
SassyBelleWares – Sassy has been such a great supporter of new Etsy members that you just have to love her!
CarDon is a great jewelry supplier who has also been very supportive of other etsians.
FiberPuppy – love her handmade felted items, she does such beautiful work.

12. Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?
Can’t say that I have a favorite author but I do have some favorite books. Among those are: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith,
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier and
Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter, I’m also a fan of Dickens. Most of the time I just grab up a mystery or detective story for a quick read.
I can never find a book mark so I just grab up whatever piece of paper is handy. I would absolutely never bend down a page corner, I love books too much.

13. If money was no object and you can live wherever you want….where would that be? Well, I feel pretty fortunate to have a home in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, hard to beat that. I will say that I have loved traveling in the south of France, I could enjoy living in a small French village, there is no bad food in France!
(gee, I’m beginning to notice a food theme in all my responses…)

14. What is your best childhood memory?
I had such a happy childhood. I particularly loved our family trips to Louisiana to visit relatives. Thinking back on my summers in the deep South, it is hard to explain what that was like in the 50s…a wonderful world, Dixieland.

Vintage Week: BlackMagicEmporium

November 23, 2011 at 10:18 am (Etsy, Etsy D-Listers, Interviews)

I did this amazing interview with my friend BlackMagicEmporium!

1. How’d you get started on Etsy?
A couple of years ago a lady I met in my silversmithing class told me about Etsy. I spent a lot of time looking at the site but just wasn’t sure if I could do it for awhile. It turned out that my boyfriend’s sister-in-law has a shop on Etsy called Lazy Day Artifacts (www.etsy.com/people/lazyday). She encouraged me to start a shop for my jewelry and gave me a lot of really useful tips.

2. What was your inspiration for your shop?
I love making jewelry! And I love collecting vintage jewelry! My shop gives me a way to share my passion with others.

3. What’s your favorite shop item and why?
OOAK Pink Swarovski Crystal, Green Glass, Copper and Silver … by BlackMagicStudio $76.00 USD
Favorite

I think this is my favorite because a whole vision started when I found the green glass pendant on the front. It took a lot of work and more than a few tries to fulfill my vision, but I was so happy with the result. I also love all the layers of colors, textures, and materials.

4. How do you unwind when you’re not creating?
I love to be outdoors- walking, camping, bird watching. I also like to just relax around the house, watching tv in my jammies.

5. What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
Yellow cake (from a box) with chocolate frosting and sprinkles.

6. What pushes you to want to create something?
One random item will attract me, I let an idea grow from it over time, then I won’t be able to stop until I’ve created what is in my head.

7. What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid. As an adult, if you stumble upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?
I liked a lot of cartoons when I was a kid. I think my favorite was The Smurfs. I would probably watch it today just to make fun of it (yeah, I’m that kind of person).

8. What’s your fantasy job?
My fantasy job would probably be making and selling my own jewelry, only with lots more money to invest, all the equipment I want, and many more sales. Or I’d love to be a research scientist focused in mathematics.

9. Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
Candy, candy, candy. I eat a pretty healthy diet, but I’ve go to get some sugar in there.

10. List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
My kitties (they own me), chocolate, coffee.

11. List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.
My absolute favorite so far is Jumi Felt (www.etsy.com/shop/JurgitaMi) Her wavy felted shawls are amazing!
I also love Anatomology (www.etsy.com/shop/Anatomology)
and Zen and Coffee Designs (www.etsy.com/shop/ZenAndCoffee)
But there are so many more!

12. Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?
I don’t have a favorite. Any more I read much more non-fiction than fiction. And I usually just grab whatever is handy and use it as a bookmark.

13. If money was no object and you can live wherever you want….where would that be?
I would say Hawaii, which is too bad because my boyfriend would say Alaska.

14. What is your best childhood memory?
Going to midnight mass on Christmas and getting to open our presents afterward. They always magically appeared while we were gone.

Kick-Start to Vintage Week!

November 21, 2011 at 10:15 am (Etsy, Etsy D-Listers, Feature Friday, Interviews)

I’m excited to kick off Vintage week! First, it’s Sunday, so we’re going to do a Sunday Special! My good friend and vintage lover BlackMagicStudio is doing an interview with me!

What was the first vintage item you ever owned? Where’d you get it?
The first vintage item I ever owned was a necklace that I bought in a small town my family was visiting in Wisconsin when I was 13 years old. It was a choker with yellow flowers that had orange rhinestone centers from the 1950s. I bought it for $3.50!

What sparked your interest in antiques/vintage items?
I really don’t know what initially sparked my interest. I’ve loved vintage/antiques for as long as I can remember, even though no one else in my family is even remotely interested in it. I do know that I love thinking about the history that is connected to each piece. And there are so many beautiful things from the past that aren’t made today.

Art Deco Deeply Carved Coffee Brown Bangle

How did you end up selling antique/vintage items?
I looked at other people who were selling vintage/antiques and thought “Why am I not doing this?? I love this stuff!”

What’s your favorite part about finding antique/vintage items?
I love feeling like I’m on a treasure hunt. I get so excited when I find a rare or special piece, especially if I get a really good bargain!

Vintage Copper Art Glass Necklace

What is your favorite antique/vintage item that you own?
I have a 1930s Pennino necklace that is absolutely gorgeous and in perfect condition. The history of the craftsmanship of the Pennino brothers is really remarkable, and their pieces are very valuable. I got incredibly lucky and it will probably be the only piece I ever own.

Feature Friday: LittleChampArt

October 14, 2011 at 8:19 am (Etsy D-Listers, Feature Friday, Interviews)

This week’s Feature Friday is my good friend LittleChampArt! Her shop is amazing! Check out the links at the bottom and read her awesome interview!

1. How’d you get started on Etsy?
I can remember ALWAYS wanting to sell my crafts as a kid. I probably had 50 string friendship bracelets made at all times, just in case 😉 I originally started my Etsy shop to sell personalized items, and then I discovered how fun a sewing machine was!
Honestly, I had never even heard of Etsy until I asked friends on facebook if they knew of a place I could sell crafts online.

2. What was your inspiration for your shop?
Entrepreneurship is in my blood. Mom used to own a Children’s Clothing Boutique. Dad owns a couple Toy Stores. I studied Small Business Management in college… I was basically born to have my own business. I love making things, too… thus, my Etsy shop was born!

3. What’s your favorite shop item and why?
I love all of my Kii-Bees, but I think my new fabric boxes (not online yet!) are going to be my favorite. They’re so funky and fun. I basically love the ability to incorporate so much color in each of my items.

4. How do you unwind when you’re not creating?
Fiddling around on the internet (I’m a sucker for any silly kitty video!)
Playing nerdy video games – like World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, or The Sims.
Snuggling with my kitty, Pidge, and watching TV or reading.

Brown, Aqua and Orange Coasters- Set of 6

5. What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
Honestly, I’m not a huge cupcake fan. My favorites are the simple ones made from boxed cake mix with frosting from a can 😉 I’m a simple kind of girl!

6. What pushes you to want to create something?
Restlessness. I get bored of doing the same thing day in and day out. Heck, I get bored just trying to sit through a 30 minute TV show!
I also LIVE for having projects to do. Its one of the things I miss most about being in school – there’s just something awesome about coming up with a plan, doing it, then getting to admire the finished project 😉

7. What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid. As an adult, if you stumble upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?
I was a kid of the late 80s and early 90s – there were WAY too many cartoons to list! Pretty much all of the old NickToons were my favorites – Doug, Rugrats, CatDog… a few friends and I tried watching an episode of Rugrats not that long ago – its definitely not as entertaining now! haha

8. What’s your fantasy job?
Owning a solid, true business. I’m not sure what that means, exactly, though! Maybe it means a brick & mortar store, or just a successful online business. All I know is that I want to be able to sell my own creations for the rest of my life!

Rainbow and Butterflies key fob Kii-Bee Keychain

9. Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
Hmm.. actually, I love purses. Its a disgusting addiction, and luckily I don’t have expensive designer taste! I use a single purse until it is falling apart and dead, but have tens of them stashed away! I’m not very girly, so I’m sure that would surprise many people to hear.

10. List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
Disney World, Disney World, Disney World.
Although, I never DO say no to that – or anything related to that little slice of heaven in Florida 😉

11. List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.
http://www.booboozoo.etsy.com – her booboo bags have come to my rescue many times! chronic knee pain, kidney stones, migraines… you name it, I’ve put a booboo bag on it!
http://www.funkychunkies.etsy.com – i’ve never received a more fun package in the mail! i got a Mickey Mouse bracelet from her and the box was stuffed with colorful tissue paper, I felt like I was opening a present!
http://www.hautecards.etsy.com – i think everyone on the dteam is part of the haute cards fan club! she does incredible designs, listens to her customer, and her products are so cute! 🙂

12. Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?
I have MANY favorite authors. I was forced into owning a Kindle because there’s no more room for books in our apartment and I’m unable to throw them away!! When reading a “real” book, though, I bend the pages. I actually trash my books, because when I get really into it, I pick at the edges. So my most well-loved books look beaten to death.

13. If money was no object and you can live wherever you want….where would that be?
Colorado! Its gorgeous there, my best friend of the past 22 years lives there, and you can see snow 365 days a year!

Pocket tissue Pouch

14. What is your best childhood memory?
Honestly, I had an incredible childhood and it is impossible to pick a favorite! The majority of my memories include the aforementioned best friend, though 🙂 I do remember always having craft projects to do with my mom – one of my favorites was creating papier mache caves for my plastic dinosaurs. I think she got the idea because she was tired of me using the laundry dryer as their cave!

Feature Friday: FiberPuppy

October 7, 2011 at 7:55 am (Etsy, Etsy D-Listers, Feature Friday)

My friend FiberPuppy did this awesome interview with me! Check it out! Photos are clickable too! Links at the bottom. 😀

1. What was your inspiration for your shop?

I’m inspired by texture and design. I love to be able to evoke a critter with just a few needlefelted lines or a shape.

I’d say I’m a think out the box kind of gal. Most of what I’ve learned is self taught. I’m slightly dyslexic, so I often do things in unconventional ways. This is a huge inspiration as I’m not confined by “the way it should be made”. I often combine techniques from different mediums. For example many of my critter hat ears are made by using origami-folding techniques prior to felting.

2. What’s your favorite shop item and why?
Oh it’s usually the last new thing I made. At the moment it is the lion hat. I had a friend who is a member of the lions club ask me to make one and it just makes me smile when I see it.

Blue Shibori Bobble Lace Felted Scarf

3. What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
Chocolate fleur de sel. How’s that for fancy pants. LOL

4. What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid. As an adult, if you stumble upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?
Oh this so dates me but I loved Josie and the Pussycats, Rocky and Bullwinkle and of course Sesame Street. I still find myself humming the noony noony noo song the cartoon typewriter from Sesame Street used to sing. I will totally stop and watch Sesame Street. It’s hilarious to see the famous people they get on there.

5. Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
I’m addicted to 80’s new wave music. I have my computer in my studio perpetually set to KROQ. I listen to it constantly when I craft. My husband hates it so it’s the only time I indulge.

Felted Red Devil Hat

6. List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
My coon hound Greta and her soulful eyes are pretty hard to deny. She’s not allowed in the yarn barn (my studio) so I’m always running outside to get some dog love. It’s probably a good thing as I can get obsessed.

Other than her, I’d say anything to do with cooking, gadgets, cookbooks, spices. I love to cook. It’s the only thing that kept me sane during lawschool. Cooking is the only art that uses all 5 senses.

7. List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.
This changes constantly and it’s usually things I neither need nor can afford but lately I’ve been obsessed with the bathtub couches from ruffhouse art. I also adore the topography art from Crafterall. Oh and I have to give a shoutout to Dressgreen. Their lotions and skin products are simply heavenly.

Molly Molar Felted Toothfairy Pillow

8. Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?

I’m a huge Science Fiction/fantasy fan. I read constantly, but my latest obsession is Michelle Sagara West.

I’m married to a book publisher who is very very careful to always use a bookmark, but I have to admit I’m a dogearer to his dismay. Well I just got a kindle so I guess that’s not an issue.

Feature Friday: SweetVegan

September 30, 2011 at 8:05 am (Etsy D-Listers, Feature Friday)

My friend and awesome fellow dteamer SweetVegan has an amazing shop! Seriously, look at her photos and tell me your stomach doesn’t growl! 🙂 Here’s an interview I did with her! Check it out! And, photos are clickable as usual.

How’d you get started on Etsy?
I don’t remember how I heard about it , but I am a florist and I wanted another outlet to sell my floral arrangements and bridal bouquets. I needed a bigger audience than the small town I live in. I thought it was such an awesome idea to have a site where things were handmade with love.

What was your inspiration for your shop?
I started with ExpressionsFloral because I use to own my own floral shop. However, I started Sweet Vegan because I saw a need for it in myself and in others… Most people I know think that Vegan food is bland and tasteless and I wanted to help change that stigma. I have tried store bought items and have been disappointed too many times by lack of taste and dryness. I wanted to make food that everyone can enjoy and show people that you can have great tasting food and not know it’s vegan. It shouldn’t be a word you have to shy from. I have lots of awesome recipes that have great flavor, I enjoy baking and I needed a new outlet for my creativity. So I created a store where I could do all that, bake foods that are made with organic, minimally processed ingredients that taste awesome and anyone can enjoy!

What’s your favorite shop item and why?
Oh that is a hard one, because I love sweets! However I would have to say that my Lemon Tea Cake Wookies ( http://www.etsy.com/listing/67626210/vegan-lemon-tea-cake-wookies-with-cream ) are my favorite. The cookies themselves have a unique flavor which comes from the EVOO and of course everything is better with cream cheese frosting 😀

Velvet Bliss Wookie

How do you unwind when you’re not creating?
I sit down with a good book or snuggle down with my sweetie and watch a movie.

What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?
Tirimisu 🙂

What pushes you to want to create something?
I don’t talk a lot, I listen and observe. Through that I get ideas and my brain starts mashing them into unique combinations and that is what makes me want to create .

What’s your fantasy job?
I would love to work in Las Vegas, LA, NY and do event planning and/or Hotel floral designing!

Do you have a secret guilty pleasure?
Etsy…well I guess it’s not secret anymore!

Buttery Shortbread Cheesecake Wookies

List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.
Hats, books and movies, purses

Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place?
Favorite author is tough because my taste varies, but here a few that I like to read over and over again: Jane Austin, D. H. Lawrence, Wilkie Collins, Leo Tolstoy, Dan Brown, Jean Auel and Ursula La Guin. I use whatever is handy at the time to mark my place 🙂

Peanut butter madness combo pack sampler

What is your best childhood memory?
Camping. Dad would come home from work on Friday and say “load up” we’d throw some things together and off we would go to the coast. Sand, water and lots of campfire fun!
